O, were I loved as I desire to be!
What is there in the great sphere of the earth,
Or range of evil between death and birth,
That I should fear, - if I were loved by thee!
All the inner, all the outer world of pain,
Clear love would pierce and cleave, if thou wert mine;
As I have heard that somewhere in the main
Fresh-water springs come up through bitter brine.
'I were joy, not fear, clasped hand in hand with thee,
To wait for death - mute - careless of all ills,
Apart upon a mountain, though the surge
Of some new deluge from a thousand hills
Flung leagues of roaring foam into the gorge
Below us, as far on as eye could see.

The narrator shows how he has been through a lot in his life and how evil has been a culprit to his life. In his love life he would have chance but would face sad ones as if he loves isn’t really caring and nice to feel. He feels to be loving and that there is no way of escaping it. His fear of death has been over taken and he is ready to face as he sees “Flung leagues of roaring foam into the gorge” which to me might mean hell or a place of death.
ReplyDeleteTo me this poem is about two people in love. The poem is describing someone who is truly in love. 'I were joy, not fear, clasped hand in hand with thee, to me this means that when they are together they are in ecstasy and that they will wait till there death together no matter what.
ReplyDeleteThe poet is saying that he desires to be in the time when he used to feel love or loved.Lord Alfred says what is it thats so great about the world and the time between the day that you are born and until the day you die;we see violence and chaos which he means by "a range of evil." The poet says "That I should fear, if I were loved by thee!" he is saying that he wouldnt have to be afraid of anything evil on the earth if he were to be loved by who I believe is God.Alfred also states that by having the love of god pain overall could be washed away.The phrase "Fresh-water springs come up through bitter brine" simply means that from harsh enviroments or from a bad thing something good can come out of it.Towards the end of the stanza he claims that even after his death that a new rising disaster will continue to occur that could be seen all over.
