How Come? by Ray LaMontagne

People on the street now
Faces long and grim
Souls are feeling heavy
And faith is growing thin
Fears are getting stronger
You can Feel them on the rise
Hopelessness got some by the throat you can see it in their eyes
I said how come
How come
Everybody on a shoestring
Everybody in a hole
Everybody crossing their fingers and toes
Government man spin his politics till he got you pinned
Everybody trying to reach out to each other
But they don't know where to begin
I said how come
I can't tell
the free world
from living hell
I said how come
How come
all I see
is a child of god
in misery
I said how come the pistol now as profit
The bullet some kind of lord and king
But pain is the only promise that this so called savior is going to bring
Love can be a liar
And justice can be a thief
And freedom can be an empty cup from which everybody want to drink
I said how come
I can't tell
the free world
from living hell
I said how come
How come
all i see
is a child of god
in misery
I said how come
Its just man killing man
Killing man
Killing man
Killing man
Killing man
I don't understand
Its just man killing man

  1. This peom I believe talks about how people now see the world. In the beginning, the author states that "fears are getting stronger you can feel them on the rise" which is how the people act now. They are too afraid of eachother and/or the things around them. I also think that the author puts ideas together that many of us want in our world like freedom, love, and justice. These are all ideas in which people never do right, there's always problems about them. Towards the end, the phrase "a killing man" is repeated several times stating that everyone is killing eachother out of fear.

  2. In my point of view I think that this poem is about how people are starting to get scaried and afraid of how people are making it seem that the world is turning into a tragedy. It seems as if they people now in days are crossing their fingers becasue of how they dont want anything bad to happen. They say that "its just man killing man" which means that thats what man are just looking for. They are wasting their free time to go search for a victim to kill. I makes me realize that people are scared to come out their bubble and see the real world.

  3. This poem talks about how society is seen today. Talks about religion when mentioning "How come
all I see is a child of god in misery" this shows all human beings as children of god and that we are all miserable in the world today because of all that surrounds us. It also says "But pain is the only promise that this so called savior is going to bring" Our savior meaning god is bringing us nothing but hardships and pain, and when the poet uses "so called" shows his position on religion he most likely doesn't believe in god. It also talks about how government is the new controller of everything that revolves around us, this is shown in the following quote; "Government man spin his politics till he got you pinned Everybody trying to reach out to each other"

  4. I think this poem talks about how society has turned out with people losing faith and how people just sometimes prefer pain than anything. What I also see is how gangs have been a big part in society and guns too. "Man killing Man," just shows how people kill each other nowadays. Overall I think this poem just makes us see how society has really turned around and how we live in fear all the time because we lost faith.

  5. What this poem is saying is that society
has evolved into A place of fear , the people can longer trust in each other.Everything seems to be corrupted and
in war.People seemed to be down and concealed from everything. The line "i cant tell a free world from a living hell" in my perspective is saying that the "free world" being the United states is no longer what it used to be and is now a place where the real value of thing have been forgotten and a war zone is within .

  6. Ray LaMontange is commenting on the events that followed 9/11. With the help of Google, I leaned that this song was released in 2004 along with his first album. The timing fits, especially when you consider the fact that he begun touring in 1999.

When LaMontange says, "how come the pistol now as profit
The bullet some kind of lord and king," he is expressing his views on the Government's true motives for the War that followed 9/11; the government was chasing money. The country with more guns has more power.

All he sees is "man killing man"
    pointless violence
