In Trouble and Shame by D.H. Lawrence

I look at the swaling sunset
And wish I could go also
Through the red doors beyond the black-purple bar.

I wish that I could go
Through the red doors where I could put off
My shame like shoes in the porch,
My pain like garments,
And leave my flesh discarded lying
Like luggage of some departed traveller
Gone one knows not where.

Then I would turn round,
And seeing my cast-off body lying like lumber,
I would laugh with joy.

  1. I think it's about troubles and shame and how much of a burden it is, and wanting to get away from all of that. why? The title basically says it.
It's a great poem, it gives a lot of description and vivd detail about the person's desire to leave. Lawrence compares the person's shame and pain with everyday objects things that you have to put on, like the pain and the shame the person is going through, he/she has to go through it everyday.
The last stanza is so vivid and to me so weird, and scary, but great use of language. It makes the readers feel a great relief.

  2. For me, I feel that this poem is talking about the speaker is in pain for some kind of shameful things that he did or he knew. He wishes to leave to get far away from that. He desire freedom, the freedom to get rid of that but he cannot. I noticed that from the poem he kept repeating that he wishes he could go. Wish means something that you hope but it’s hard to be true. The last stanza said that he wishes that he would be able to be get rid of the pain even he has to die but he will be enjoy it since he got freedom.

  3. I think the poem refers to a deceased person who is ready to leave this world of pain and shame. The speaker mentions he/she wants to leave his/her flesh, which means all he/she would be taking would be their soul. I have heard many times that when someone is about to die, they recall about all the shameful things they did in the world and feel sorry about it. I think this soon to be "departed traveler", finds himself/herself in this situation and cannot take it anymore. He/she wants to rest in peace and once his/her soul is released from that body that has caused so much pain the speaker would be able to laugh and be happy again in someplace.

  4. When I read this poem to me it seemed as if the speaker wanted to get away from everything and was not so happy about his/her life. The speaker just wants to get away in the sunset they are seeing as its going away they want to go along with it as well. I believe they just want to be happy and care-free of life and other problems this world has caused for them.

  5. I agree with Alma. I think the speaker is shamed about some of the things he has done in life. All he wants is to get away from it all. Once he is dead or gone away from the way his life is now, then he will be happy. He will look at his life before and laugh with joy that it is not like that anymore. Even though he has made mistakes in his past he wants to be better and change.

  6. This poem is really intriguing, especially with the ending and the mood shift from shamefulness and pain to relief and joy.
